North Cascades National Park Travel Guide: Best Things to Do

North Cascades National Park sits in north-central Washington State and feels rugged and untouched. The park is packed with dramatic mountain views and bright blue alpine lakes. A lot of the scenery can be enjoyed right from the highway, but if you’re looking for more of an adventure, the hikes are where this place really stands out.

Planning your visit to North Cascades

North Cascades National Park doesn’t have large cities or major tourist towns nearby, which is both good and bad. It helps keep the area feeling quiet and less crowded, but it also means fewer options for places to stay, eat, and fuel up.

The closest towns are Marblemount on the west side and Winthrop on the east side. Both have a handful of hotels, cabins, and rentals, with a few more scattered options throughout the region.

No matter where you stay, expect to do some driving between trailheads, overlooks, and stops along the North Cascades Highway. It’s worth planning ahead, especially for gas and food, since options are limited once you’re in the park.

Key Locations in the Park

There isn’t a central “main area” like some national parks. Instead, highlights are spread out along the highway. Popular stops include Diablo Lake, Ross Lake, and trailheads like Cascade Pass. Plan your stops ahead since everything is pretty spread out.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Cell service is limited.
  • Gas stations are few and far between.
  • Bring food and water for the day.
  • Weather changes quickly, even in summer.
  • North Cascades Highway closes in winter.

North Cascades Itinerary

Day 2

  • Chain Lakes Loop or Sahale Arm
  • Picture Lake

If you’re planning to hike Sahale Arm, plan to dedicate most of a day to that hike alone.

Diablo Lake

Diablo Lake is definitely a stop you shouldn’t skip. As one of the most popular attractions in North Cascades, this blue-green lake is easily accessible from several roadside overlooks.

The lake gets its unique color from glacial silt suspended in the water, giving it a look that almost doesn’t seem real. It really is beautiful and reminds me of many of the lakes around Banff.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is July through September when the snow has melted and most trails are accessible. Spring can be hit or miss with snow, and fall brings great colors but cooler temps. Winter access is very limited due to road closures.

We went at the beginning of August and it was perfect.

How Much Time Do You Need?

You can easily check off North Cascades National Park in a day by driving through and stopping at the main viewpoints. If you’re planning to do any hiking or spend more time sightseeing, you’ll want at least 2 days.

Sahale Arm

We were really excited to hike Sahale Arm. After watching videos and seeing it on a few itineraries, we decided we were up for the long hike. We had read that parking fills up quickly, so the plan was to stop at the trailhead ahead of time and see how big it was.

What we missed was that it’s about 13 miles of gravel road to get there, and honestly some of the roughest gravel I’ve driven on. We made it a mile or two in before deciding to turn around. The road was heavily washboarded and just not worth continuing.

Chain Lakes Loop

After the failed attempt of Sahale Arm, we decided to look for an alternate hike and that is when I found Chain Lakes Loop. It wasn’t a hiking location that I found on most itineraries. Chain Lakes Loop isn’t actually inside North Cascades National Park. It’s located near the Mount Baker area, but it’s close enough that it’s an easy addition to a North Cascades road trip. The trail sits in the northern part of the region, and you’ll drive through Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest to reach the trailhead.

We loved Chain Lakes Loop and was the best hike of the trip. It provided a challenging hike while offering some of the best mountain scenery of our trip. Throughout the hike, you’ll get incredible views of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan, along with several beautiful alpine lakes. Some of the lakes along the route include Bagley Lakes, Mazama Lakes, Iceberg Lake (my personal favorite), Hayes Lake, and the Galena Chain Lakes.

  • Distance: 6.3 miles (loop)
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Elevation Gain: 1800ft+
  • Estimated Time: 4 to 5.5 hours

Picture Lake and Highwood Lake

On your way to or from the parking area, make sure to stop at Picture Lake. It’s a quick stop, but the views are incredible and it’s one of the most photographed spots in the area.

Ross Lake Resort

Ross Lake Resort feels a little off the beaten path compared to the rest of North Cascades. The resort sits right on the lake with floating cabins, and getting there takes a little extra effort since you have to hike in or take a boat shuttle. You call the boat shuttle by calling them over a phone.

We didn’t stay there, but it looked like an awesome place to unplug for a few days and enjoy the mountains. Even if you’re just passing through, Ross Lake is worth adding to your itinerary.

Thunder Knob

If you’re looking for an easy stop, we enjoyed visiting Thunder Arm, a scenic area connected to Diablo Lake. Nearby, you’ll find trails such as Thunder Knob and Thunder Creek if you’re looking to stretch your legs a bit more. The lake access is right off the highway and doesn’t require a major time commitment, making it a great roadside stop. We spent a few minutes there taking in the views and enjoying the scenery before continuing on our drive.

Washington Pass Overlook

We didn’t make it to Washington Pass Overlook during our trip, but it consistently showed up as one of the top stops in North Cascades. The overlook is an easy roadside attraction with a short paved walk to panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. If you’re driving the North Cascades Highway, it looks like a stop that’s worth adding to your itinerary.

Final Thoughts

North Cascades ended up being one of my favorite national parks. It feels less crowded and more rugged than many of the other parks we’ve visited, and there is a good mix of easy roadside stops and challenging hikes.

If I were planning another trip, I’d still make Diablo Lake the priority, but Chain Lakes Loop ended up being the highlight of our visit. The combination of mountain views, alpine lakes, and fewer crowds made it a memorable hike that I would gladly do again.

Whether you’re just driving through for a day or spending a few days exploring the trails, North Cascades is a park that deserves a spot on your Washington itinerary.
