Planning Your Visit to Diablo Lake
Just a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Seattle, Diablo Lake offers such beautiful scenary. Nestled along the scenic North Cascades Highway (State Route 20), its brilliant turquoise water and mountain backdrop make it one of Washington’s most photographed roadside stops.
Diablo Lake at a Glance
The lake’s vibrant blue-green color comes from glacial silt suspended in the water. As sunlight reflects off these tiny rock particles, the lake takes on an almost unreal appearance. It reminded me of many of the incredible glacial lakes we visited around Banff.
One of the best things about Diablo Lake is how accessible it is. The main overlook is only a short walk from the parking area, making it an easy stop whether you’re spending a full day exploring North Cascades National Park or simply driving across Washington.
If you have extra time, several nearby hiking trails, including Thunder Knob Trail, offer even better views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Even without a hike, the roadside viewpoints provide some of the most memorable scenery along the North Cascades Highway.
Is Diablo Lake Worth Visiting?
I appreciated how easy Diablo Lake was to visit. Located just off Highway 20, it doesn’t require a long hike or major detour to enjoy some of the best scenery in the North Cascades. Between the stunning turquoise water, incredible mountain views, and the peaceful atmosphere, it was one of my favorite stops along the drive. Whether you’re road-tripping through Washington or visiting North Cascades National Park for the first time, Diablo Lake is a quick stop that delivers unforgettable views with very little effort.
