Moraine Lake is one of the most breathtaking destinations in the Banff National Park. The backdrop is made up of 10 different peaks that are snow covered and surrounded by lush green forests. Like other lakes in the region, Moraine Lake also has vibrant green hue to it as well.
The obvious activity at Moraine Lake is just sit back and take photos all day long, however there is canoe rentals and hiking as well. Most of the photos below are taken from the iconic Rockpile Trail, which provides the best panoramic views of this location.
Planning your visit to Moraine Lake
Getting to Moraine Lake requires some pre-planning. You can only get to the lake by shuttle bus. We got up at 2 am the day we went to the lake, left our hotel at around 2:45 am and had around an hour drive to the city of Lake Louise from Canmore. Our bus departed from Lake Louise at at 4am and is around 25 to 30 minute drive. We visited the park in late June, which means the longest days of the year.
Activities at Moraine Lake
The sun was just starting to come up when we got to lake, so we headed over to the famous Rockpile which is the famous location to taking photos. Be prepared for this location to be very busy in the morning.
This first photo was at 4:56am

We stayed in the same spot for quiet some time to continue to take photos as we watched the sun rise and start to shine on the peaks.

We just sat and enjoyed the views of the sun starting to peak over the mountain and shine on the peaks.

This might sound a bit selfish, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the canoe rentals here, since they can take away from the view for others. While the scenery is still incredible at Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake has a more vibrant emerald color, and the canoe rentals were cheaper there.

Here is a photo from slightly higher elevation at the rockpile that gives a slightly different view.

We decided to checkout what the rest of the Lake had to offer. We went for a hike on the Shoreline Trail, its about 2 miles long, we only went about a mile then decided to turn around.
Here is what it looks like from the shoreline

In this photo, you can see the Rockpile, this is where the first photos were taken from.

Wrapping up Moraine Lake visit
Watching the sunrise at Moraine Lake is truly a magical experience. As the first light touches the peaks of the Valley of the Ten Peaks, the mountains glow with shades of gold and pink, reflecting beautifully on the lake’s turquoise waters. The stillness of the morning, combined with the breathtaking scenery, makes it a moment to remember. Whether you’re capturing photos or simply taking it all in, experiencing sunrise at Moraine Lake is an unforgettable way to connect with nature’s beauty.
